Jan 14 2016 is National Dress your Pet Day
Say hello to Gracie! Her sweater is very clear indication of her attitude: “I’m pretty, I am to be respected and you better handle with caution!” She had a challenging life. One of multiple hospital visits and two homes of people that loved her but she choose to love few. She is gone now but she loved dressing up.
I have seen lovely little outfits for: Cats, Dogs, Birds, Iguanas and rabbits. Of course it is fun the share the playful character of your pet with others. I knew a cat named Beau, he loved and I mean absolutely loved his bow ties. I would go for a visit and he would come in to show off his new fashion. Walk around with his head held high and proud so he would make sure you saw the stunning neck tie he was wearing.
Then there was Joey the Wonderdog as my Nephews and Nieces like to call him. Every week he would get his bath and after drying his coat, all of his bandanas would be lined up. He would go down the line and choose the color he wished to wear that week. It was always great fun to watch other people’s faces when he would choose his bandana. Because the process was for him to nose three or four and those would be pulled out and set aside for the final choice. As he examined each bandana on his final pass I would hear: “he can’t tell the difference”. I would laugh and hand them the bandanas they could mix them up and then offer all of the bandanas to him. He would make his final choice and even if they tried to confuse him he would just gently take the color he decided to wear that week from them. So on went the bandana and he would do his happy dance.
So dress up is a fun and playful way to express the personality of your pet. Does your pet have a favorite color or texture? Do they have a rain coat? Or maybe a piece of jewelry, like a necklace or bracelet? Maybe your dog has booties or doggles; I have seen dogs that even had their ears pierced. Whatever the creative expression, have fun, play, and show off your pet’s happiness.

As a registered veterinary technician I worked with Lizards to Lions, and I faced moral and ethical dilemmas. This prompted me to do a tremendous amount of soul searching and that caused me to clearly define my life philosophy. In my career my position has been to always be pure of love from my soul for that animal in that moment in time. In the years of listening and speaking with so many animals they became teachers about life, death and everything in between. The time, energy and passion I invested in animals is pale in comparison to the lessons animals have taught and are continuing to teach me.
In my off time I have been involved in dog carting, obedience, agility, herding and showing.
